How to be a modern day Nostradamus

Due to popular culture people credit Nostradamus with having made incredible and accurate predictions about the near and far future. Really all he did was put together some works about end time prophecies. He wasn’t and never actually admitted to being a prophet.

Notwithstanding, allow me to continue with the theme of the power of believing. Nostradamus is an example of how powerful believing can be. People can read about the prophecies, relate them to particular events and thus believe that they are true. I don’t want to enter the debate about whether they are actually true or not. Rather, I want to suggest to you that there is enormous potential to change lives with the power of believing.

We have the opportunity to be modern day Nostradamuses, not in the sense of predicting far away future world events but by predicting the success of individuals in your family and friends by saying very specific and positively encouraging words to them about their future.

Alfred has a 16 year old brother Leo, he knows him well, his dreams and his hopes. Alfred knows also that Leo has talents but he hasn’t realised them properly yet. Alfred has seen the high standard of his art work at school and he’s seen how good he was making model planes and cars. Leo’s despondent since finishing high school with low grades except in art because he doesn’t know how to find a decent job, hates working at MacDonalds, hates not having a girlfriend and hates having zits all over his face. Poor chap!

What can Alfred say to Leo that will completely transform his life and provide him with a destiny?

Now that I’ve got you all on a cliff-hanger, I’m going to leave you thinking about that one! (Sorry folks! And no that was not what Alfred said to Leo)

Just to give you some small clues though… If you tell a person that one day they will become successful in a particular way they will believe that encouragement and self-fulfil the prophecy. Learn to understand their dreams and aspirations and encourage them by instilling confidence with very specific and positive words about their aspirations.

Some basic facts about Nostradamus:

He was born December 14th 1503 and died of a gout related disease on July 2nd 1566

Most famous for his work ‘Les Propheties’ which it turns out he had in fact plagiarised a lot of his work from numerous sources such as the Bible, the Mirabilis Liber and De Honesta Disciplina. He also produced a series of Almanacs.

He very firmly denied being a prophet or playing one. The title of his book in French is commonly misinterpreted as being ‘the Prophecies of’ rather than ‘the Prophecies’ by M. Michel Nostradamus.

Many modern day biographies about him are a pile of trash that are conspiracist based and have their sources typically in writings of the 17th century that are inaccurate and have statements from unsourced rumours.

Nostradamus lived in the time of the bubonic plague that swept across Europe. It’s quite likely that his first wife and children died of the plague in 1534. He also lived in a time when conviction that the end of the world is imminent was as rife as the plague itself. This was also the time of the Ottoman empire and the Muslim invasions that were going on was seen as the work of the anti-Christ.

Nostradamus was really a very average book writer of his time doing what he believed was right to remind people that these are the end times. He claimed to base his predictions on judicial astrology which at the time was accepted as a mainstream science by the Catholic Church.

I want to hear about Alfred and Leo.....did Alfred encourage Leo to go to the Art Institute or some similar university, encourage the talent that he had? Not everyone has Mechanical Intelligence, it is a gift that should be nurtured....

This subjest was a very big BBC presentation just a few weeks agom it was amazing how wrong he was about much, but so many people adore him here??? I question that, but I remain sceptical Im afraid.

first off, people of the not seaux Q've Rev, scare me!

2ndly, as just like 2dai's society, we all are rather curious about Life and we that don't already believe in something, are most apt 2 believe in Anything... and do 2 the fact that those of us Anything Believers usually have a connection with either dates, facts of our own recollection, numbers, objects, colors, times of dai and/or times in general of the clock, smells, tastes, names, behaviors, etc. etc. etc... We tend 2 cling on 2 those Predictions of the infamous Nostradamus because he was capable of taking that which makes sense 2 our senses and mixing it with plagiarized emotions of others thoughts which eventually link us together in our own celestial movement.

Therefore, it’s not so much a matter of believing … it’s more of a mystabewilderment of our virgin yet well oiled 6th senses.

Tuesday 20 February 2007 - 08:16AM (CST)

thought provoking?

Tuesday 20 February 2007 - 09:44AM (MST)

Good post, Phil!

Most people in the western world view Nostradamus through the conspiracy-'filter'; most don't know what you pointed out.

In truth, he was a minor character who has been much-maligned and much-over-hyped. End story.

Tuesday 20 February 2007 - 10:23AM (PST)

Phil ~ I like this post. When I was in high school, we had a civics teacher that showed an in-class film about nostradomus...scared the living lightening out of me...now I just kinda laugh about it. It was definitely over exaggerated I feel. His suggestions were broad and generalized. Great post!

Tuesday 20 February 2007 - 03:49PM (EST)

Donna - We might get more about Alfred & Leo later, you never know!

Annwyl - Quite agree with being sceptical.

Sai - Yes but isn't there a sixth sense mystabewilderment in the power of believing?

Promise - I promise you that Quindo's Quill is intended to be thought provoking ;-)

Astra Will - Thanks for the compliment. I'm thrilled you have come to my blog.

Kim - Thanks again for visiting. I predict you will be reassured by future posts.

Wednesday 21 February 2007 - 04:13AM (GMT)

No....

i think ANYONE can Believe!

not everybody has a sixth sense and/or doesn't know how 2 use it....

People will justify their opinions with books such as Nostrodamus', or the Bible, or anything else they can use to prove their point. If you notice, they never say ahead of time, oh, we should be careful, Nostrodamus predicted what would happen. It's only used afterwards, to justify what they are saying. I pretty much discounted it years ago. Now, make up a story about Alfred and Leo, that would be fun...... :)

Saturday 3 March 2007 - 02:04PM (CST)

What if he predicted a future that happened to be from a theatre screen in 2006. If the writings of Nostradamus were questionable not even 300 years ago, why should we believe in the bible ...

The Illusion of Belief

Last Night I had a dream that I was walking the tightrope over the sea.

What does that mean?

Yesterday was the first day of the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. It was a lovely day in Hanoi and the sun was shining. Moon's family and I put on our best clothes to go to the pagoda to say prayers to the ancestors and deities. For me this was a very strange experience because it is the first time I have visited a pagoda at Tet with a Vietnamese family.

These days I don't know what I believe in. While walking round the pagoda and putting my hands together before each deity I decided to imagine them as 'living' ancestors who can hear my prayers and know what's on my mind.

Belief is a strange and powerful thing. If you choose to believe in something, that 'something' becomes a reality in your life. For example, if you believe in an astrological profile set for you, you will become the personality that the profile has dictated. If you are unwell and decide to believe you can heal yourself to full recovery - you can. If you believe you can do something and set your mind to accomplishing that goal - you will.

Once I had a dream that I would break my glasses. In the morning when I woke up I put on my glasses and they broke in exactly the way they had in my dream. My dreaming mind had already picked up from my sub-consciousness the fact that my glasses had a weak point in it's structure. I believed that I would break my glasses and they did.

Hypnosis is a method of tapping into our minds to alter what we believe about something. If you are hynotised into believing you will not experience pain during a surgical operation, your mind will believe you cannot feel the pain and the brain cuts off the pain receptors to the affected area.

Astrology is an illusional science. The position of the planets do not affect your life but what you choose to believe in will affect your life. Don't let your beliefs be affected by illusions. Use belief as a positive tool to affect your life in positive and constructive ways for your benefit and for the benefits of those around you.

The mechanism of belief could be mystical - but whether it is or isn't I want to use the power of belief for a good cause. Life for me is a delicate walk of the tightrope. Below is the sea of illusions but I have the belief to walk that tightrope with confidence and to stay in balance.

a tight rope over the sea?????? ah geeez, really?? you don't want to know.

Sunday 18 February 2007 - 12:19AM (CST)

there is a hidden message in this for me... i know what it is sai'ing and today i decided on how to fix a problem i have... the illusion is that i still want to see good in what was never really there!

Sunday 18 February 2007 - 12:43AM (CST)

Ok - for those who have been expressing concern by their interpretations of the dream, let me try to bring a little reassurance-

All dreams can be interpreted in a variety of ways. In the days when I was writing down all the dreams I could remember and trying to interpret them, I soon realised that the dream dictionaries could only be a rough guide and sometimes for certain circumstances completely and utterly wrong.

I didn't provide the context or the mood in which I had this dream. Rather than a negative meaning this dream had a very positive impression on me. While walking the tightrope I was elated and feeling confident. I reached the end without falling off and the dream went on to other things that I don't now remember. I decided to associate it with the issue of the illusion of beliefs because that was what on my mind when I woke up.

From http://www.mydreamvisions.com/dictionary-t.htm

tightrope
To dream you are walking a tightrope means you're feeling pressure to maintain a delicate balance, or "walk a thin line," somehow in your life.

And from: http://www.mydreamvisions.com/dictionary-s.htm

sea
A sea in a dream can represent the context of your life - meaning the setting and situations within which your life takes place - "your world." Or it can represent "the unknown" - a huge, deep area which holds secrets.

Sunday 18 February 2007 - 08:13AM (GMT)

U said u believe in ur dreams - I agree with u 60%, as my experience some of my dreams came true in the future, but just my good dreams happen, and my bad dreams never happen in fact. It's so good like that; I believe God is around here ;-) X LU, my dear.

Monday 19 February 2007 - 03:39PM (GMT)

I personally feel we waste too much time worrying about dreams. I've written them down and analyzed them ad infinitum. For me, the brain is like a computer. While I sleep the brain is idle and in a reprocessing mode. In REM, I'm more aware of external stimuli and this is when I get my most vivid dreams. After much consideration I decided it was all a waste of time to analyze my dreams. My brain is just reprocessing everything that has transpired; paying more attention to anxieties and hopes. My most frequent dreams were of flying or the ability to jump entire staircases in a single leap. What does this mean to me? Sex.

Monday 19 February 2007 - 09:59AM (CST)

Dreams perplex me. When I go in the book store..I am always tempted to buy a dream interpretation book...only I start thinking...who wrote this and just how do they truly know what symbols mean what for dreams. I always put the book back. But having said that, I truly believe in the power of persuasion. I believe our mind is capable of great things. Perhaps with more focus, concentration and meditation...we could accomplish far more than we realize. Great post as always! You post the most captivating stuff.

Monday 19 February 2007 - 11:17AM (EST)

I don't know if I believe my dreams, and I'm not sure if I think that's their function. I believe that the subconscious mind is a mystery and speaks to our conscious mind in strange, sometimes in older, symbolic ways. After all, the older parts of our brain represent prehensile design and so pre-date language. Those people who have powerful minds manage to connect the submerged 95% of their minds with their surface minds. Like an iceberg, most of our true power goes unseen beneath the surface. Dreams are a part of that power.

Monday 19 February 2007 - 09:29AM (PST)

i believe my dreams and if i knew of other dreams of ur's i think i would believe in them, also. i am not quite sure who it was that said the extra prayer for me but thanks, it worked!

Monday 19 February 2007 - 09:20PM (CST)

Moon - The great thing about believing is that if you chose to believe in good things then they have a tendency to come true. 60% might in fact actually be about right! ILU very much my Dear!

Cosmo - I agree that it's a waste of time to analyze all our dreams because that would lead to information overload. I still believe however that our REM dreams are a very useful way of understanding ourselves. If you still frequently dream of flying and leaping stairs, then you could be right - I envy your sex life! It also suggests you are very content with your life at the moment and exuberating with a lot more confidence these days.

Kim - probably right to put the book back especially dream dictionaries. The good ones are usually those that are written by true academic researchers. I really enjoyed delving into the mysteries of my dreams some 5 or 6 years ago but now I'm satisfied to just pay attention to those that make an impression on me. Thanks for your compliments I really appreciate them.

Icarus - yes it's an interesting thought to remember that parts of our brain are prehensile! Does that mean dreaming served more function in pre-language times? And does that mean dreaming is more useful to horses, dogs and cats? The mind boggles! I love the iceburg analogy... to think there are billions of people walking around only tapping into about 5 to 10% of their brain power - what a waste of a lump of powerful and mysterious grey matter!

Sai - I'm glad it worked! Thanks for believing in my dreams whether they be my aspirational or REM ones. I need and value the support of people like you always.

Who I am

I was digging through some old archive folders of mine and found an Astrological profile report that I had generated from the internet over 5 years ago.

Now as far as believing in anything like astrology I have always remained a firm skeptic. Nevertheless, everytime I have read this profile of mine I have always been completely baffled at how this report is so accurately ME! All I provided for this report was my date and time of birth and location of birth.

The following Report was generated in 2002.

How You Approach Life and How You Appear To Others

You are a natural diplomat, reasonable, tolerant, fair, always willing to listen to varying viewpoints, and ready to see the other side of an issue.

Even if you strongly disagree with someone, you will try to find

points of similarity and agreement rather than emphasizing the

differences.

You often avoid taking an extreme or one-sided stance on anything.

You have a strong desire for harmonious and pleasant relationships,

and express a spirit of cooperation, compromise, friendship, and

fairness.

You very much want to be liked and because of your need for approval

and acceptance, you are easily influenced by others' opinions,

especially when young.

You so much want to please that often you will suppress your own

intense or unpleasant feelings in order not to offend others.

Sometimes your politeness is interpreted as phoniness or wishy-washiness.

Your need to create harmony extends to your physical

environment and personal appearance as well. You appreciate

beauty and have a natural sense of balance, symmetry, and

proportion. You do everything in good taste, with a sense of

style and art. From your home furnishings to your choice of

clothing, everything must be aesthetically appealing, not simply

functional or utilitarian.

You also feel that relationships are an art, one that

especially interests you and one that you are usually quite

skilled at, for you possess tact and acute awareness of other

people.

Marriage is very significant to you and finding the

right person to share your life with is extremely important.

Being part of a close couple seems natural to you - you are not

an independent loner.

Having a partner increases your self-confidence. You do have a tendency, however, to become overly dependent on your partner and perhaps not to develop a clearly defined identity outside of the relationship.

Finding the balance between being yourself and blending and uniting with another is a challenge for you.

Others see you as an agreeable, smooth, harmonious, and

"nice" person. Though there may be much more to you, this is the

sort of face you show to the world. You possess personal charm

and an understated, noncombative manner.

Your motto could be

"you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" for you

usually take a friendly, cooperative approach rather than a

strong, forceful, I'm-going-to-conquer-the-world attitude.

The Inner You: Your Real Motivation

You are, in many ways, an eternal child. Your mind is

bright, alert, curious, flexible, playful, and always eager for

new experiences - and your attention span is often quite brief.

You grasp ideas quickly and once your initial curiosity has been

satisfied, you want to go on to something else. You crave

frequent change, variety, meeting new situations and people.

It may be hard for you to decide just where your talents and

true vocation lies, for you have a multitude of interests and

are loathe to limit yourself by concentrating on just one. You

are easily distracted by all of the other fascinating

possibilities. Your curiosity and restlessness propel you into

many different experiences in life, and you are willing to taste

or try anything once. Doing the same thing over and over again,

even it is something you do well, is real drudgery for you.

You live in your head a great deal - reading, observing,

thinking, spinning ideas around - and you need mental

stimulation every bit as much as you need food and drink. In

fact, if you had to choose between a good book or movie and a

good lunch, you would very likely choose the former. You have a

creative mind and often live by your wits.

You are also a very social creature, with a strong need to

communicate and to interact with people. You enjoy using and

playing with words and have a real flair for getting your ideas

across in a clever, interesting, articulate manner. Writing or

speaking are areas you have talent for.

You also have a rather light and mischievous sense of humour,

and often do not take anything too seriously. Though you crave

emotional involvement, it is hard for you to achieve it, for you

are frequently unwilling to commit yourself to anything, to take

responsibility, or to limit your personal freedom and mobility.

Your happiness lies in using your creativity and your

language skills to communicate something meaningful, to teach,

inspire, or bring people together.

You have an unbiased mind and can usually offer a fresh, clear, uncluttered perspective.

Your faults are your lack of constancy and persistence, and your

tendency to overlook or ignore deep emotional issues and other

people's feelings.

Your Mercury is in Cancer

You are highly interested in inner, subjective, and personal

issues, and your thinking is based more on feelings, intuition,

personal experiences, and prejudices rather than reason or

logic.

Intellectual abilities and accomplishments without heart or soul mean little to you.

You are empathic and would be an excellent counsellor, for you are a sensitive listener and deeply interested in a person's feelings and inner life.

In addition to psychology, you are drawn to education, art, poetry, music, or mythology.

You are not especially confident about speaking in public, but will open up and share your thoughts in small, intimate groups.

You enjoy keeping a diary or personal journal and reading the chronicles of others' lives and personal development.

Who else has Mercury in Cancer?
Martha Stewart, television host
Diana, Princess of Wales
Kathy Bates, actress
Michelle Kwan, skating champion
Bill Cosby, comic, actor
Tim Allen, comic, actor
Tom Hanks, actor
David Duchovny, actor
Michael J. Fox, actor

Your Neptune is in Scorpio

You are part of a 14 year group of people that have very

intense psychic sensitivity and imagination. Your age group is

very attracted to the strange, weird, and unusual. The sense of

the macabre and bizarre is strong, and this is reflected in much

of the music, art, and fashions of your age group. Novels and

movies with mystery and chilling suspense are also popular with

your age group. Emotional depression, drug use, and suicide are

likely to be relatively high in your age group. There is also a

deep mystical sense, and Eastern religions and meditation are

very attractive to your age group.

Your Rising Sign

Libra Rising:

If your Rising Sign is Libra, it's hard for anyone to say

'no' to you. You seem so charming and persuasive, people can't

help but accommodate you! You likely look smashing even if

you're just running to the market for milk. You may seem

outwardly indecisive, but you're so irresistible that you'll

find those around you more than happy to make up your mind for

you. Keep vanity and sulkiness -- two less attractive Libran

qualities -- in check. Luckily, Libras avoid conflict at all

costs -- expect tons of harmony, fun and lots of carefree

communication!

i am actually more the Yr of the Horse than i am my actual Leo'ness.

Monday 12 February 2007 - 09:26PM (CST)

From a roaring lion to a galloping horse?

Here's the Horses Profile:

People born during the Year of the Horse have a pleasant, amiable, easy going disposition which guarantees popularity and a large following of friends. Blessed with good humor and geniality, they are extremely comfortable to get along with for they have the knack of instantly putting people at their ease.
Charming and cheerful, the Horse is an extremely likable character. Hard working, self-possessed and sharp, the Horse skillfully acquires power, wealth and respect. However, the Horse's sometime-appreciated frankness can be tactless. The Horse's impatient pursuit of success may become selfish and predatory. Horses can be obstinate. In truth, they are more cunning than intelligent, and they know it. This is why, despite that air of assurance, the Horse lacks confidence in himself.
Above all, the Horse is cut out to be in politics, a career which could bring great personal satisfaction with the opportunity to grind his own axe. He could be a winner here, for he has the facility to sway the crowd.
He is very quick-witted and he is right in there with you before you have had the chance to finish what you were saying; he's on to the thought in your mind even before you've expressed it. This permits the Horse to forestall any arguments that anyone can dream up.
With the Horse, movement is everything. Freedom and independence are as essential to Horse-born people as the air they breathe. A low boredom threshold, both in terms of interests and friendships, is characteristic of those belonging to this sign, and adds a whimsical quality to the otherwise level headedness of these folk. Consequently, they tend to act on impulse, and this means there is an element of unpredictability about them. Sometimes they change their minds before completing a project, giving others the impression of irresponsibility. This behavioral pattern of stopping before completion may result from being born halfway through the twelve-sign cycle.
Like the symbol by which they are represented, Horse-born people are high-spirited and lively. Their vivacity and enthusiasm make them very popular. With a deft sense of humor, Horses are masters of repartee. They love to take center stage and delight audiences everywhere. Sometimes rash and willful, they can be prone to rapid changes of mood and, although seldom really explosive of temper, when they do see red, it is not a pretty sight. Those who have suffered a Horse's rage will never feel quite the same about him again, for his fits of temper are inevitably a bit childish. If he wants to succeed, he has to master them. Rebelliousness is another difficult Horse trait. Because of his carefree nature, the Horse needs plenty of room for self-expression or he can become bitter and exhibit destructive behavior. Also, the Horse can become overtly jealous and offensive if he senses that someone else is valued more or treated better. He reacts by competing and promoting himself in order to win favor.
Resourceful, self-confident and mentally alert, Horses are quick to catch on and efficient in all their undertakings. Because of this ability, this dexterous and incisive mind of theirs, they can make accurate judgments and sound decisions instaneously. They are particularly skilled at handling money, very often in business dealings following their hunches. When it comes to intuition they have a sixth sense that is quite uncanny. Unfortunately, as the Horse is a creature of changing moods he's liable to lose interest suddenly in things he's taken up, whether it's a love affair, a single deal in business, or a whole career. He'll start again with the same determination, and he'll enjoy an equal success. He can make it in any career that demands neither solitude nor meditation, for he is an extrovert and he needs to be surrounded by people who approve of him and flatter him.

Tuesday 13 February 2007 - 04:30AM (GMT)

And there's more!

Due to their dislike of inactivity, Horses get involved in many sorts of works outside their chosen trade. Good with their hands and attracted to art, they are skillful craftsmen with a talent for innovation.
The first and second part of the Horse's life will be full of ups and downs. He will leave his home and family while he is still young, and this will bring its own disappointments. His love life will be by no means smooth. But the third phase of the Horse's life will be a peaceful one.
Also, it is better for the Horse if he is born in winter. Otherwise he may become overworked, and work is not his strong point.

You and I Sai are 'Fire' Horses and the following makes slightly less comfortable reading:

The six decades spanning the gaps between the years of the Fire Horse mean that this rare sign occurs only in the years 1846, 1906, 1966, 2026, etc. These years are bad for Horses themselves and bad for families who have a Horse in the house. This is because the Fire Horse's influence can change from beneficial to malignant, and during these years all Horse families will become subject to illness, accidents and bad luck in general.
Men and women actually born in the year of the Fire Horse will have the same characteristics as the ordinary Horse -- but they will be more accentuated, in the good qualities as well as in the bad. The Fire Horse will thus be a harder worker, a more cunning individual, more independent, more gifted ... and alas, far more selfish. His passionate nature and the frantic egotism which seizes him will lead him to commit his worst excesses when he is in love.
There are those who say that the Fire Horse can be a good influence in the heart of his own family. But popular belief asserts that he will make trouble in the home he was born in just as he does in the one he himself has built.
What we do know is that the Fire Horse will have a career that is more varied, more exceptional, more interesting than that of the ordinary Horse. The Fire Horse carries within himself the seeds of fame ... or of notoriety!

What do you reckon - fame or notoriety for us?

Tuesday 13 February 2007 - 04:35AM (GMT)

And finally:

The Horse in Love
When they fall in love, Horses seem to lose all logic, all sense of perspective. Unpredictable at the best of times, when they lose their hearts, there is simply no telling what the Horse-born will do next. These people possess an extremely low boredom threshold and soon get tired of the same people and the same situations. They love their independence and, as soon as they feel a partner is making too many demands or limiting their freedom, they will rebel and gallop off in search of new pastures. Noncomformists, free thinkers, thirsting for life, Horses risk daring romantic adventures. The idea of being married several times does not disturb them, and they adore children. Age eventually mellows the Horse, and those born under its influence who have not found stability when younger are likely to settle down in later life.
Conspirators together, the Horse can make his life with the Ram. He also lives in harmony with the Tiger and Dog. These two, intent on the solution of their own psychological problems, will pay no attention to the romantic instability of the Horse. He also has a good relationship with the Rooster, Monkey, and Boar. Under no circumstances must the Horse marry a Rat, in particular if the Horse is female and born under the rare sign of the Fire Horse (1906, 1966, etc.). Any liaison between these two passionate natures can only result in sparks which must lead to conflagration.
July is the month of the Horse. The time of the Horse is from 11:00 a.m. to 12:59 p.m.; their direction of orientation is the south. The Horse's color is orange.
